The combined birth weight of Amanda’s 5 prematurely born children was 9805 grams – 21lb 9 oz. When her older children were born, premmie clothing was not readily available and they both wore cabbage patch doll clothes for many weeks!
Leaving her babies in hospital are some of the saddest days for Amanda, who lives in Bendigo. As a result, she is passionate about supporting regional families who must travel far from home to safely deliver a premature baby in a city Hospital with neonatal intensive care facilities.

Families of premature babies (delivered or transferred from Melbourne after 34 weeks gestation) in Bendigo receive welcome packs including meal vouchers, clothing, toiletries, magazines and hand knitted beanies. Amanda visits the families in hospital or at home after self or health professional referral.

In 2005 Amanda started Victoria’s first playgroup for premature babies and children in central Bendigo and assists other groups to form their own premmie playgroups. Amanda is currently working to create short term, affordable accommodation for families with hospitalised babies and children.
